Our history

Fattoria Il Lago is an ancient farm and belonged to the noble florentine family of Bartolini – Vivai - Salimbeni in the past.
In 1962, the farm became property of the Spagnoli family. The new owner started a process of restoration of the buildings and of the agrarian patrimony, in particular to the wineyards and all areas connected to the making of wine.

The estate has about 400 hectares (988 acres). Inside the property, there are still 3 small villages composed of old stone houses. The three villages, La Villa, Il Lago and Macereto, used to house farmers and their families.

The main village is that of La Villa, which holds a predominant view over the valley of Dicomano and whose buildings have been especially classified for their architectural and historical value.
On the exteriors of some of the houses, particularly above entrances, one can still see the coat of arms of the noble Vivai family.
Today, Borgo La Villa forms an integral part of our farm accommodation.

Borgo Il Lago is a group of stone houses surrounding the Villa Il Lago which give our estate and village its name.
The Villa was originally the residence of the Marquis Vivai. They had their own private religious chapel built nearby, where the remains of the Marquis Cosimo Filippo Vivai are still resting.
Borgo Il Lago forms the center of the farm where we offer additional apartments for our guests.

The Macereto village is a group of old buildings on a little hill surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.
Borgo Macereto is the production center for our farm.
